  •  Appointed Deputy Director of National Coalition on Black Voter Participation (August 15, 1995): MelanieCampbell began her servant leadership journey at the NCBVP, setting the foundation for decades of transformative civic engagement, women & youth leadership & empowerment and Black political power building.

  • Launched Black Youth Vote! (April 5, 1996): Founded and activated NCBCP’s Black Youth Vote!—a trailblazing, non-partisan youth civic leadership, organizing and voter engagement program that continues to inspire and mobilize young Black civic leaders, organizers and voters across the country.

  • Led the NCBCP in a 18-month compressive strategic planning process in 1998, that culminated in establishing a year-round 365-day a year civic engagement organizing model (Unity), establishing 10 state-based affiliates and a rebranding of the organization, that includes changing its name to National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.

    Launched first Unity National Civic Organizing Campaign in 1998: Spearheaded the Unity Campaign, a historic coalition-building initiative that unites national and grassroot organizations around Black civic participation, voter turnout, election protection and census count outreach, which has continued through multiple election cycles and Decennial Census every ten years.

    Led Unprecedented Black Voter Turnout National Unity Campaign’s (2008 & Beyond): Played a central role in organizing and mobilizing record-breaking Black voter turnout in the 2008 presidential election and helped lay the groundwork for future civic victories, including the election of the first Black U.S. President, Former President Barack Obama.

  •  Advocated for Policy & Judicial Justice: Championed the passage and public support of the Affordable Care Act (2010–2012), and as national co-convener of Black Women’s Roundtable helped to lead a Black women leaders collective advocacy coalition that led to the historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court.

  •  Launched the Black Women’s Roundtable “Women of Power” National Summit (2011): For the past 14 years, President Campbell has led this dynamic annual summit that brings together more than 300 Black women leaders and organizers from across the country. The summit has become a key national platform for Black women’s leadership, policy, and advocacy—and produces an Annual Black Women in the U.S. Report and polling in partnership with Essence, elevating Black women’s voices and policy priorities.

  •  Empowered Women, Youth & Democracy from Grassroots to National Stage: As a trusted voice for Black women and civil rights, President Campbell helped mobilize the largest black voter turnout in modern history in 2020 that elected the nation’s first Black woman Vice President, Kamala Harris.

  • Co-Founded the NCBCP Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Institute for Leadership, Civic Engagement, Economic Empowerment & Social Justice and Southern Regional Office, anchored at Clark Atlanta University, in partnership with Dr. George French, Jr., President, CAU(2022): In honor of NCBCP’s longtime Board Chair, the late Thomas W. Dortch Jr., President Campbell co-founded this institute to continue his legacy of leadership development, civic engagement, and economic empowerment. The institute also launched the Hope & Justice Fellowship, with its inaugural cohort of Clark Atlanta University students in 2023.
